I am the co-founder of Barnes’ Dog Food. I wanted to create a range of kibble based dog foods to accompany my therapy and nutritional advice business. Why? Well, I wanted to be able to offer a lower cost, high quality dog food alternative. There is a gap in the market for those struggling with the cost of living or those who have large dogs with large appetites. Or for those where it is not possible to cook or raw feed their dog in a complete and balanced way but still want to provide quality nutrition to their dog. While home-prepared food is popular right now and has many advantages to health, there is also currently there is a Call to Action to improve standards. It is very difficult to create a diet that has all the nutrients a dog needs to avoid pathology; with nutritionally responsive diseases on the rise it is important for me to offer a food that supplies all the required nutrients (according to FEDIAF) but in the least processed way as an alternative to home feeding. I have created a number of specialist recipes that are not regularly available on the market by focusing on improving the standard of highly processed kibbles, and commonly with a high level of carbohydrate. Instead we have worked with a supplier who uses Fresh Trusion and creates our kibbles from human grade animal proteins (suppliers to Marks and Spencers) for the very best possible quality. Fresh Trusion is a low heat processing method which helps to keep the food as natural as possible. We also use a higher level of protein (around 65%) as dogs are carnivores! Whilst dogs can indeed digest carbohydrates (but levels vary in individuals), we want our dogs to have higher levels of protein as it is used to repair and maintain their body and tissues.
Expert advice for your Dog food
All my advice is from an independent point of view as a nutritional therapist. I live in the real world, that home prepared food is hard and not always possible financially. I am a dog owner too and we all need an easy and time saving way to feed. All dog owners want to give their dog the best. With our high quality food, which meets FEDIAF requirements, and with the potential of additional fresh food toppers, or alternating raw, costs can be reduced and life can be a little be easier – without compromising on your dog’s health.
Our products focus on low processing methods to retain protein quality and high levels of protein but we also have a range of rarer protein to support dogs with allergies. We also include superfoods to supply antioxidants; with additional and balanced Essential Fatty Acids (omega 3:6) to reduce excessive inflammation, a common root cause of dis-ease. With only natural preservatives, such as rosemary and additional minerals which are difficult to meet requirements through food alone, which include manganese, vitamin E and zinc, so you can be assured your dog is getting all the nutrients they need.
Our recipes, whilst grain free, do contain a source of fibre (sweet potato) as fibre is vital, to produce a healthy stool and aid your dog’s detoxification channels, to keep him as optimal as possible! You can read more about the features mentioned via the links below:
